Week 11: Review/Preview

Reflecting on progress for the week of March 14 through March 21 , and previewing goals and tasks for the upcoming week.

Basically my only two blog posts this week are weekly reviews? Fine, it is what it is. But I promise to post more this week - however crappy the posts may be.

This week is kinda a big week for my family. Behind the scenes my wife and I have been talking about moving to Arizona because the cost of raising a family in LA is just astronomical. We make excellent money by most metrics, but the overall cost of living in LA has seemingly increased ten fold since the start of Covid. Real estate, food, gas…everything is HOT in terms of prices.

So here’s where we stand. I have another round of interviews for a job that should I get it and it pays what I think I’m worth, then we’ll stay. The new job with the (hopeful!) new salary will definitely help us overcome some financial challenges. If I don’t get the job, then we live with my in-laws in Phoenix for a few weeks. My wife already has a job lined up in Phoenix, so she’s set. Me? After my current contract expires at the end of June, then I’m unemployed.

The kicker on top of all of this is that I probably won’t know if I’m offered a job at the new school until the end of the week, but a POD is coming in about two weeks to load up all of our crap. Basically, we have a one week turnaround either way.

As crazy as our life has been lately, I’ve still managed to tinker away at my writing projects. The work isn’t as free-flowing as I’d like, but it’s consistent. And at the end of the day consistency is what I’m trying to build up. It doesn’t matter what life throws your way, if you want to be a writer or creator then you just gotta find a way to work through life’s challenges.

Successes for the Week

  • Wrote a really shitty draft of a bible for my new pilot. It was a lot of work, and it pushed me into thinking about my story at a much deeper level than I’m accustomed, at least at the beginning of project.

  • Completed another week of my ISA craft course. Great material. This week’s work is about sequences, which is something I’m not familiar with from my coursework at UCLA.

  • Designed a new page for this website that I hope to be releasing soon. It’s call WORKSHOP and it will have several sub-pages dedicated to various writing activities, exercises, and articles of books I’ve read and are currently reading.

Misses

  • As always, I didn’t publish any blog posts this week. I’m really trying to make this a daily exercise, but I’ve been so focused on my current pilot that time slips away. That’s a good thing, for sure, but I still want to get into the habit of posting some type of daily reflection. It’s a good writing routine and exercise that helps me build writing stamina and pushes my thinking.

Goals/Tasks for the Week

  • Accountability group meets on Thursday - yay!

  • Second meeting with my new writer’s group on Friday - yay!

  • I get feedback on my show bible from both group - yay! but nervous.

  • Continue to work on my ISA craft course. I’m going super slow with it because I take a lot of notes and then try to apply those learnings to what I’m currently working on.

  • I’d like to release a new homepage for this website by the end of the week. There’s still a few more tweaks and writings I need to get done before I can do so, but I’m getting closer.
